Die Melancholie der Tradition

+ MOBY DICK; Or, The Whale

Program

20:30
Die Melancholie der Tradition

Madame Nielsen reads and sings norbert c. kaser

Madame Nielsen had not heard of Kaser's work before Transart invited her to construct a reading of his oeuvre in Bruneck. In the South Tyrolean author, the Danish artist did not find the radicality perceived by Kasers peers, but rather a flavour of tradition and a melancholic romanticism. The gaze of Madame, artist-in-residence for Transart23, does not capture the impact and stir that Kaser's writings evoked here in South Tyrol. But it is precisely this open, fresh, curious gaze that Transart seeks in its international guests. Madame Nielsen creates her own personal and intimate connection with Kaser's poems, weaving them into a reading with her own melodies.

21:00
MOBY DICK; Or, The Whale

dir. Wu Tsang

In the second part of the evening, the group Moved by the Motion takes on one of the great American novels: Hermann Melville's Moby Dick. Sophia al Maria and Wu Tsang's film adaptation examines the novel's undercurrents, encountering a recalcitrant hydrarchy and tactile collectives of "sailors, renegades and castaways" (CLR James). Directed by Wu Tsang and set to live music by ZKO with composition by Caroline Shaw and Andrew Yee with Asma Maroof, the silent film follows the white whale both above and below the water's surface, developing a visual cosmology that resists the exploration and exploitation of land under imperial colonialism.
