Music (2023)
A movie by Angela Schanelec
The Oedipus myth is at the virtual core of this masterful work of elliptical storytelling, in which every detail, no matter how small, becomes a sign. A film that takes us from the mountains and beaches of Greece to the lakes of Berlin, from the 1980s to the present day. During a late-night storm, a newborn baby is rescued by a paramedic, Elias, who takes him home to his wife. The two name him Jon and raise him as their own son. Involved in a tragic accident, Jon commits murder and is imprisoned in a correctional institution for a year. There he meets Iro, a prison officer, with whom a love affair soon develops. One of the guard's gifts to the young man is a cassette tape: Monteverdi, Bach, Pergolesi and other baroque protagonists. The aesthetics of music become the programme of Angela Schanalec's baroque-postmodern cinema. An intellectually stimulating yet addictive challenge.
