The festival

Transart festival has been making waves in the Trentino-Alto Adige area for more than twenty years.
Starting in Bolzano, the nerve center of the festival, events take place across the region, from north to south, creating a contemporary, inter-regional, and cross-border platform.
Over the years, the festival has also collaborated with many local organisations and with important international festivals, such as MUTEK Montreal, Club To Club, Maerz Musik Berlin, Klangspuren Schwaz, and Elevate Festival.

In past editions, Transart has had the pleasure of hosting hundreds of artists spanning the international scene. Notable guests have included: Marina Abramovic (2002), Laurie Anderson (2003, 2011), Blixa Bargeld (2013), Matthew Barney (2005), Nils Frahm (2014), Beat Furrer (2004, 2011, 2013, 2015), Jon Hopkins (2013), Matthew Jonson (2017), Jannis Kounellis (2004), Klangforum Wien (2005, 2010, 2015, 2020), Tomoko Mukaiyama (2016, 2018), Moataz Nasr (2013), Ninos Du Brasil (2017), Quiet Ensemble (2015), Sonic Youth (2008), Patti Smith (2010), Omar Souleyman (2016), Teho Teardo (2013), Tokyo Contemporary Dance (2002), Roman Signer (2014, 2017, 2020), Peaches (2021), Attila Csihar (2022), Pussy Riot (2023), Florentina Holzinger (2023), Madame Nielsen (2023), Thomas Bangalter (2023) and Patha du Prince (2023) and many more.

History

When Transart was founded in 2001, it was still just an experiment. We wanted to bring the contemporary to Bolzano in a completely new guise, to demonstrate how it is possible to overcome borders, such as those that exist between the artistic and physical languages ​​of the places that traditionally host culture.

Since the very first edition, Transart events have been held in a broad variety of locations, reinvigorating industrial spaces, former barracks, factories, commercial properties, stations, parking lots, parks, fields, and mountain huts.

After this first experience, Transart continued to grow and evolve, exploring new places and new ways of involving the public. The key to the festival’s success is its experimental character, which leads to surprising and unprecedented results in every edition, a unique alchemy deriving from the combination of locations and the encounters between artists and citizens.
