The Sanatorium of Soft Gravity

Manuel Zwerger

The Sanatorium of Soft Gravity is an immersive music-theatre project poised at the intersection of installation, concert and scenic composition. Conceived for abandoned or derelict spaces, the work weaves together architecture, sound, movement, light and video into a perambulatory, multisensory experience. At the heart of the project lies the encounter between the Tetra Brass and MDI ensembles, whose instrumentation is expanded through audio playbacks, bespoke sound objects and specially engineered semi-analogue apparatus. Linked to the musicians via tubes and mechanical couplings, this device functions simultaneously as a resonant body, a sculptural stage element and an autonomous agent within the installation. Sounds migrate through interior and exterior spaces – shifted, distorted and recontextualised within new spatial dimensions.
Drawing inspiration from the suspended, ethereal atmosphere of the sanatorium in Thomas Mann’s Magic Mountain, the work explores altered perceptions of time, body and reality. The result is a state of gentle displacement: a liminal realm suspended between concert, installation and dream.
