Saturday 21.09
h 15:30 → h 22:00
with Alessandra Ferrini, Betty Tchomanga, School of Mutants
This day of performances is part of the public programme of the exhibition La Linea Insubrica (The Insubric Line) at Kunst Meran Merano Arte, bringing together 11 artists to speculate on the image of this geo-point, which emerged as a result of the collision between the European and African tectonic plates, which also runs through the city of Meran/o. The title refers to a method of studying rocks that critically opposes the idea that they always remain unchanged.
The performances by The School of Mutants, Betty Tchomanga and Alessandra Ferrini are presented as practices that analyse ‘the history and the present that rocks hold with the idea that it can be fluidised and “de-essentialised”.
We invite you to join us on this day with a rich programme of performances, lectures and a parade through the city of Meran/o!

The School of Mutants is an art collective and collaborative art and research platform founded in 2018 in Dakar. Its starting point is a multidisciplinary investigation into the role of universities and educational institutions in identity-building processes in Senegal since its independence in 1960 and, more broadly, in West Africa. The collective will stage a parade in the public space of Merano in which the textile works displayed in the exhibition will be activated and spaces for debate, discussion and dialogue will be opened.
Alessandra Ferrini's new performance-lecture, conceived in dialogue with the installation at Sight Unseen, will focus on the so-called "peaceful penetration," which historian Roberta Pergher identifies as the settlement tactics linking internal and external Italian colonialism, with specific reference to South Tyrol and Libya. The aim of the talk is to compare some of the contents of the anticolonial novel The Conscript by Gebreyesus Hailu with the cases of forced conscription in South Tyrol during the occupation of Ethiopia.
This dance solo develops around the mythological figure of Mami Wata, a water goddess whose myth originates in Bénin, Cameroon, Congo, Brazil and Cuba and embodies the ambivalences of colonial history. A figure of desire and monstrosity, an "other" who fascinates and that we typically reject. Betty Tchomanga encounters her, embodies her, and brings forth a series of faces from the deepest waters.
